Newby fifth, earns All-state as FHS cross country girls 6th

Led by freshman Alex Newby’s fifth place finish, the Lady Admirals finished sixth at the TSSAA Class AAA Cross Country State Championships at Percy Warner Park Steeplechase Course in Nashville Saturday, Nov. 4.

Newby (19:04) proved she was one of the state’s best, but it didn’t come without extra motivation.

“She was a little bit motivated by Amber Zimmerman, a friend of her’s from Webb,” FHS coach Kellie Ivens said. “She won the private school race so that actually got her pumped to get ready to race.”

Being just a freshman, Ivens is pleased with how Newby has progressed throughout the year.

“She has been strong every race, learning every step of the way,” the coach said. “If you ask her what cross country is all about she will tell you ‘they shoot the gun and I run’ and with that kind of attitude it’s great because she just goes out and does a great job.”

Others Lady Ads running at the state meet were Alyssa Dresen, who finished 19th (20:14), Sarah Brinson 58th (21:36), Margo Sneed 61st (21:40), Caroline Sneed 90th (22:34), Hope Brinson 99th (22:34) and Sarah Miller 110th (22:47).

“Allysa Dresen, who is a soccer player was extremely close to being all-state and she still had a good race after playing all those soccer games,” Ivens said, “She played last week in all those overtimes and she plays the full soccer games as well, so I think she had a great performance.”

Bearden’s Jenny Randolph finished 41st with a time of 21:04.

On the boys side, Farragut’s Tom Gilmartin finished 23rd (17:03) and Chris Wright 29th (17:12).

“Chris Wright probably had one of the best races of his season,” Ivens said. “We’re pleased with the kids, they did what they can and they had to be happy with that and as long as they tried their best, that’s all we ask.”
