BHS boys roll, 2-0

Bearden’s basketball team started the season off on the right foot with two wins in the Thanksgiving Classic in Johnson County. The Bulldogs (2-0) opened the tournament with a 71-49 win over Unaka Friday, Nov. 17, then a 77-43 win over Johnson County Saturday.

“I went up with the feeling that Unaka is usually in the Class A tournament. ... I felt really good about the win over a good program that normally wins twenty games a year,” Bearden head coach Mark Blevins said.

Matt Ternes led Bearden with 12 points and seven rebounds against Unaka. Andy Fennell added 11 points, six steals and five assists while only committing one turnover. Gabriel Campbell and Hunt Rosson had 10 points each.

Demonte Simpson had eight, Blake Jenkins seven, Marcus Webb four, Benji Ware three while DeShawn Oravetz, Joshua Collins and Dustin Craig rounded out the scoring with two each.

With major off-season injuries, Simpson, Jenkins and Craig were limited. “In each game we will try to give them maybe thirty seconds more. It’s going to be a while before [they] really get into the full swing of things,” Blevins said.

The Bulldogs got off to a 19-0 start Saturday and cruised. Rosson led with 19 points, shooting 8-of-9 from the field, adding five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Campbell had 12, Craig 11, Jenkins six, Simpson, Ware and Collins five, Terry Johnson, Fennell and Ternes four and Oravetz two.
