Stated in the article, as it has been stated many other times, the author has misused the statement by Farragut Mayor [W. Edward “Eddy”] Ford [III] that the town of Farragut is not in the school

business.

The governing bodies of the town of Farragut, the City of Knoxville and Knox County in fact do not have a say in the policies of the Knox County School[s] system. They are not a governing body for the schools.

The Tennessee Codes Annotated legislated the policy making responsible to a County Board Of Education.

The Knox County Commission has a financial responsibility for the school system in that it must approve the money for the school system budget. But the use of this money is the responsibility of the Knox County Board of Education.

When we have concerns about the school[s] system, we should address them to our School Board representatives.

They are the people we elected to make the decisions for the school[s] system and they have the responsibility to determine the best direction for our schools.

The town of Farragut has been very generous over the years with its support of the schools within it’s boundaries. The town contributes financially to many programs and activities of all Farragut schools. But just like the Farragut schools’ PTAs and Farragut businesses that also give financial support to the activities and programs of our school, this support does not entitle them a governing role.

It is the responsibility of the Knox County Board of Education to gather information it needs to make their decisions.

It is the responsibility of Knox County residents to make their comments known to their Knox County Board of Education representative.

Rita Holladay
