Hill leads ‘young’ FHS Swim-Dive team to 4-2 start

Having lost 26 seniors off its 2005-06 team, this season's “young” Farragut High School Swim and Dive squad will carry a 4-2 record into 2007.

"The overview is we're very young, we had a large graduating class last year," FHS head coach Mike Bowman said. "Our freshman class this year is about the same size as last year's graduating class."

Fresh off victories against Karns and Berean Christian School of Knoxville Sunday, Dec. 17, the Aqua Admirals have also beaten Knoxville Catholic and Oak Ridge this season. Losses have come to powerful archrival Bearden and private school power Webb School of Knoxville.

Indiana University signee Jessica Hill, a senior, leads the girls. Hill is defending state champion in the 100-yard breaststroke plus an Olympic Trials qualifier.

"She's definitely our strongest girl as a whole, she's been swimming a little bit of everything just depending on the meet to use her versatility," Bowman said. "Her strengths are definitely I-M and breaststroke."

Female swimming captains are seniors Sarah Kortebein and Kathryn Machiela.

"Our guys are really, really young," Bowman said. "Michael James [junior] has done exceptionally well this year and been a little bit more versatile. Eric Craig and Seth Carter, who are both sophomores, have been doing well.

"We have some good leadership with Ben Hyman and Drew Quinn as our two guy [swimming] captains," Bowman added.

As for top divers, Bowman points to senior captains Kali Reynolds and Tony Gianaselli. Adding depth and experience is Jenny Westbrook.

Farragut's next meet is a dual showdown with Maryville High School at Maryville College Saturday, Jan. 13.
