• Merit Construction, Inc. will host an open house 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 18, at Merit’s corporate headquarters at 10435 Dutchtown Road for minority- and women-owned contractors and suppliers interested in providing subcontracting services to Merit. During the open house, Merit will present information about how to do business with Merit.

• East Tennessee journalist Art Powell has joined the AAA East Tennessee staff as public affairs specialist effective Jan. 2. Powell will work in media relations, community relations and be a contributing editor with the AAA East Tennessee magazine Going Places and assist with safety and education programs.

• Conductor Cornelia Kodkani-Laemmli will present “Music to the Ears” at a luncheon program hosted by the Knoxville chapter of the American Marketing Association from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Orangery. The program is open to all.

• The accounting and consulting firms of McWilliams & Company, PC and Lattimore Black Morgan & Cain, PC have agreed to merge their practices effective Jan. 1. With the combined resources of the two firms, LBMC will become one of the largest firms in Knoxville and will provide one of the most comprehensive services offerings available.

• BB&T Corporation and Coastal Financial Corporation announced that they have signed a definitive merger agreement. The $394.6 million transaction would give BB&T the No. 1 deposit market share in the thriving metro Myrtle Beach, S.C., market. With $1.7 billion in assets, Myrtle Beach-based Coastal Financial operates 24 banking offices through subsidiary federal savings bank Coastal Federal Bank.

• The Tennessee Department of Revenue will hold its next free bimonthly new business workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the department’s Knoxville regional office, 531 Henley St. The workshop will be held on the seventh floor in conference room B.

• The National Association of Insurors and Financial Advisors - Knoxville will host its next program 11:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 19, at The Foundry. One hour of Tennessee Insurance CE will be offered. There is no charge for members; non-members are $20, which includes the CE session, lunch and keynote lunch speaker.

• The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, Board of Pharmacy, announced the statewide launch of the controlled substance database, a tool that will identify prescribing patterns of health care professionals and dispensing pharmacy licensees.
