String classes begin at Pellissippi State campus


Pellissippi State Technical Community College offers non-credit banjo, mandolin and guitar classes for beginners starting Tuesday, Jan. 16, with other sessions beginning March 5 and March 6. No experience is required to take any of the courses.

“Parent/Child Beginning Guitar Class” meets from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesdays, Jan. 16-Feb. 13. Children ages 6-12 are eligible to participate. The course provides an opportunity for a parent and child to learn guitar together. The class is limited to 12 parent/child sets, and the cost is $105 per set. Additional children from the same family may join for $55.

Open to participants ages 13 and up, “Six-Stringin’ From Scratch: Guitar for the Adult Beginner” meets from 7:30 to 9 p.m., Tuesdays, Jan. 16-Feb. 20. Students will have fun while they learn basic chords and tablature. This class is limited to 25, and the cost is $89.

“Quick Pickin’ Mandolin for the Adult Beginner” meets from 7:30 to 9 p.m., Mondays, March 5-April 9, for ages 13 and up. Limited to 12, this course will have participants playing traditional mandolin tunes by the end of the class. The cost is $89.

Two styles of banjo playing will be presented in “Dueling Banjos for the Adult Beginner,” which meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesdays, March 6-April 24. During the first half of the course, students will learn an old style of playing called “up-picking,” and the second half will be devoted to learning bluegrass, Earl Scruggs style. The class is limited to 12, and the cost is $105. The course is for students ages 13 and up.

Each class requires a workbook, available from the instructor at an additional cost. Also, participants must furnish or rent the appropriate instrument. Instruments may be rented from the instructor, Anna Uptain Denison, prior to class.

All courses meet at the Pellissippi Campus on Hardin Valley Road.
