Webb girls rip Catholic

For the Webb Lady Spartans it is all about peaking at the right time. After a shocking loss to Powell earlier in the week, Webb bounced back with a 53-33 victory against non-district rival Catholic Friday, Feb. 2, at Webb.

With an 18-4 record following the victory, the Lady Spartans have plenty to be pleased with; but according to head coach Shelley Collier there are a few pieces missing from the puzzle.

“I thought we played out of position a lot,” the coach said. “We are playing hard but we are not playing position-wise the way we need to play but the effort is there.

“We are just trying to work on being in position defensively and I thought we played out of position and allowed too many easy baskets to the bucket.”

Webb was led in scoring by Glory Johnson’s 19 points. The 6-foot-3 junior gave Catholic (8-16 after the loss) fits all night by dominating nearly every aspect of the game.

“I thought Glory was all over the boards and I thought she was huge as far as taking over defensively with her ball pressure,” Collier said. “Her presence on the floor is what allows us to have touches; it’s what allows us to have the tempo we like to have.”

For Johnson it was all about deception. “I figured if I moved inside-out they couldn’t really catch on to what I was doing,” said Johnson, equally comfortable bringing the ball upcourt as posting up. Webb got 12 points from Jessica Goswitz, eight from Faith Dupree.

Catholic was led by Jenna Mire with 15. Addison Springer had 10.

“Anytime you play Catholic it is a magical game, we don’t overlook anybody,” Collier said. “It’s fun to play in games where you know you are going to have a big crowd like this, and a team like Catholic with the tradition we have and the history of the rivalry is always fun.”
