AquaDog ‘threepeat’ in 33rd KISL meet
Webb 2nd, FHS 3rd, CAK 6th, Catholic 8th

Three meet records went a long way toward providing a Knox-Area Interscholastic Swim League “threepeat” for the Bearden AquaDogs during the 33rd annual meet Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2-3, in the UT Student Aquatic Center.

A.J. Tipton was the key BHS strokesman in all three meet records as the AquaDogs (747 points) out-distanced runner-up Webb School (657.50) and third-place Farragut (623). Christian Academy of Knoxville was sixth (304.50) and Knoxville Catholic eighth (216).

Tipton, a junior, won the boys’ 200-yard freestyle in a record 1:43.19 after his opening leg in the 200-medley relay helped provide a meet record with Bo Fethe, Hunter Owen and Cameron Higdon (1:37.83). Tipton anchored a meet record in the 400-free relay with Cliff Robins, Higdon and Andrew Frost (3:16.55). The BHS standout also won the 100-butterfly (:50.83).

“We’ve had something that’s been unparalleled these three years,” Tipton said. “It’s really been a great experience.

“It’s not just a couple of kids that make a team, it’s the kids that are on the B-relays and C-relays,” Tipton added. “It’s really a group effort to get a win like this.”

Added BHS head coach Lauren -Hancock, “The big difference is the depth. ... Chad Vaughn and Derrick Thompson, Tara Fentress, those are the kids that don’t swim year-round but scored some major points.”

Higdon was also a double-winner in the 200-IM (1:57.66) and 500-free (4:50.99).

Webb was led by four winning efforts from senior Claire Galdun, capturing the 200-free (1.54.87), 500-free (5:06.32) and as a leg on the winning 200-free relay that included Claire Smith, Jen Muhlheim and Katie Keel (1:41.36) and 400-free relay foursome also including Jen Muhlheim, Stephanie Ward and Paige Ayres.

Other Spartan girls champs were the 200-medley relay quartet of Smith, Ayres, Keel and Ward (1:50.83), Keel in the 50-free (25.02) and Jesse Sorrell in the 100-backstroke (:54.43).

Webb’s boys won the 200-free relay with Kevin Glatt, Jimmy Denneny, Jesse Sorrell and Hunter Banister (1:31.28).

Farragut’s top efforts came from Indiana University signee Jessica Hill, champ in the 100-breaststroke (1:05.95) and Laurel Chaney in the 100-backstroke (:58.86).

FHS head coach Mike Bowman praised Hill and Chaney plus top efforts from Dylan Willis, Eric Craig, Jessica Hunter, Samantha Webb, Kirsten Degges, Nicki Galler, Caity Ferguson, Rachel Bellich, Elissa Massie, Cecilia Wille and Courtney Ott.

Top CAK Warrior was junior Jenna Voelkert, second in the 50-free and 100-free.

Led by boys diving champ and perennial standout Sean Letsigner 551.15, the KCHS Irish also got a meet record from junior Jace Howanitz in the girls 200-IM (2:05.33), while she also won the 100-free (:53.63).
