Demolition set for Turkey Creek Road bridge

Farragut residents who travel Turkey Creek Road between Virtue Road and Brixworth Boulevard may soon need to find an alternate route.

This section of Turkey Creek Road will be closed beginning Feb. 19 and not expected to re-open for several months.

“It’ll be closed from the bridge up by Virtue Road to about a hundred feet past the east end of the bridge,” said assistant town engineer Casey Wood.

The road closing is to allow a new bridge to be built. Wood said the bridge demolition wouldn’t be as spectacular as the recent overpass demolition in Knoxville. He said the company that got the bid, McKinnon Construction, would probably cut up the existing bridge and remove it in sections.

The contract was let for about $460,000, he said.

“The new bridge is going to be much wider,” he said. “It will have twelve-foot lanes with sidewalk on both sides of the bridge.

“The contract time is six months. It’s expected to be open Aug. 1 and the total project is expected to be completed at the end of August.”

Wood said all local emergency services had been notified of the road closing so they could develop alternative routes to get to those needing assistance.
