Backstrom makes college choice official

Named District 4-AAA Forward of the Year last season, Ben Backstrom also earned All-state honors in 2006 with the Farragut High School boys soccer team while collecting All-Region 2-AAA and All-District 4-AAA honors for the second straight year. The standout Admiral signed National Letter of Intent papers with Western Kentucky University Feb. 8 during a brief ceremony in the FHS commons. “Ben is one of the most prolific scorers to come out of East Tennessee,” FHS boys soccer head coach Wallie Culbreth said, adding Backstrom led all Southern states in scoring during “Super League” club play among the best teams in the southeastern United States. Choosing Western Kentucky “back in June,” Backstrom, 18, said he “wanted to go to a big school and it’s about twenty-thousand people. And the campus is really nice. ... It had everything I wanted.” Thanks to graduation losses coming to the Western Kentucky roster next season, Backstrom said he’s “got an excellent chance to play” as a freshman forward. Backstrom is seated alongside parents Kurt and Suzi Backstrom. Standing, left to right, are David Hultquist, club coach who is also boys head coach at Webb School, Culbreth, and Mike McClain, Nike Impact club head coach.
