Russell makes college choice official - Thu, Feb, 22, 2007
Jake Russell, 2006 All-state, All-Region 2-AAA and All-District 4-AAA forward/midfielder for the Farragut High School boys soccer team, signed National Letter of Intent papers with the University of Richmond Feb. 7 during a brief ceremony in the FHS Commons. “Jake is one of the best overall athletes I’ve ever seen,” said FHS boys soccer head coach Wallie Culbreth. “His ability to adjust to whatever’s going on on the field is outstanding. He’s got a can-do attitude, and he always gives you a hundred-and-ten percent. ...” As for why he chose Richmond, “It’s a great place, the academics are top-notch as well as the athletic program,” Russell said. “And when I walked on campus, and it just felt like home to me. ... And they have a great soccer program there.” Russell, 17, said he’s “more of a forward” who thinks he can earn immediate playing time. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound senior said he also was leading goal scorer for the back-to-back state champion Nike Impact ‘89 club team. Alongside Russell are his parents, John and Deborah Russell. Seated far left is his grandfather, Charles Glassmire, and far right, younger brother, Nick. Standing are Culbreth, left, and Mike McClain, Nike Impact head coach.
