Farragut takes top spot at Science Bowl

OAK RIDGE – Farragut High School Team 1 took home the top honor at the annual Tennessee Science Bowl Saturday, Feb. 24.

Forty-nine teams from 35 high schools across Tennessee participated in the all-day academic competition, which featured questions focused on the scientific disciplines of astronomy, chemistry, biology, earth and general science, mathematics and physics.

Major sponsors of this event were the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, Pellissippi State Technical Community College and The Knoxville News Sentinel.

“The D-O-E Oak Ridge Office is proud to be a part of this competition each year,” Gerald Boyd, manager of DOE’s Oak Ridge Office, said. “Students come from all around the state and gather in a competitive atmosphere in the spirit of teamwork and competition. It is truly mind-boggling to see the extensive knowledge they have in the disciplines of math and science.”

As the winning team, Farragut High School Team 1 received a $1,000 cash prize for its school, a first-place trophy and an all-expense-paid trip to compete with more than 60 other teams from across the nation in the DOE National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., April 26-30.

Trophies and cash prizes also were awarded to the runners up: second-place, Oak Ridge High School Team 2, received $750; third-place, Maryville High School, received $500; fourth-place, Volunteer High School Team 1 in Church Hill, received $250; and the winner of the civility award for outstanding sportsmanship, City University of Liberal Arts Team 1, Memphis, received $100.

The Tennessee Science Bowl took place on the Blount County Campus of Pellissippi State Technical Community College in Alcoa.
