New BHS softball era starts on top

A pair of extra-base RBI hits plus a solid effort from its senior ace pitcher allowed Beardenís softball team to win its season opener.

Behind an eight-strikeout, no walk, complete game performance by senior hurler Rachel Rowan, the Lady Bulldogs held off a seventh-inning South-Doyle rally to beat the Lady Cherokees 5-3 Monday, March 12, at BHS's Kim Hazelwood Field.

"I was very pleased with the baserunning, hitting the ball, defensively, and our pitching was stout," BHS first-year head coach Gary Mashburn said. "We played well, but we can play better."

A first-inning RBI triple from senior catcher Meagan Fredenberg and a third-inning RBI double by freshman Elizabeth Gray led the Bearden offense.

Carter Davis, Alex Boris and Kelley Callaway added singles.

Rowan allowed five hits and beaned two batters in seven innings, but worked out of a seventh-inning SDHS rally.
