boys soccer preview: State champ ’Dawgs return plenty

Minus the SoccerDawg star talent of 2001 and 2002, Bearden's defending Class AAA state champion boys soccer team nevertheless is capable of matching past “back-to-back” state crown success under Eric Turner.

“We've got a lot of experience coming back, a senior-led team, so our leadership's been good,” coach Turner said. “We've got a lot of, not All-star players, but players who have been through it. ... We're going to be good enough to where we could beat anyone on a given day, but not good enough to not show up. We could lose to anyone on a given day.”

Senior co-captain Bryan Walker will become a three-year starting goalkeeper, joining senior midfield co-captain Ryan Radcliffe as All-Region 2-AAA honorees last season. The duo represents Bearden's only returning honorees at the region level or higher.

However, coach Turner said junior forward Tom Webster is “probably going to be one of the top forwards in the state this year. He's just so dynamic and so explosive off the ball. He's really a handful for people.”

Turner said Walker is “going to be leading our defense.”

Other returning starters are senior midfielder Cesar Ruiz, and senior defenders Trevor Cook and Brandon Wyrick. Juniors Evan Simpson and Justin Nash are battling for a defensive starting spot.

Seniors Jordan Hanks and Scott Heminway, along with sophomore Aaron Attkisson, will add midfield depth, while senior Nathan Zivi and junior Aaron Schoenfeld will work alongside Webster “up-top.”

Turner said sophomore Ryan Campbell and junior Alex Widmer “should see a lot of time” at forward.
