softball preview: FHS has tough nucleus

Farragut returns a solid nucleus of talent from last season's District 4-AAA tourney championship and league runner-up.

Junior Rachel Ingleby, the Lady Ads' No. 2 pitcher last season, becomes staff ace in 2007.

Junior Abby Rose Martin returns as catcher, while freshman Stephanie Harris looks to have won the first base job.

Sophomore Morgan Hoolbrook and Junior Kristin Murr are battling for second base duties — and both are expected to help pitch.

Moore said he'll be “looking for leadership” from senior shortstop Sarah Young, a three-year starter at the position. Moving up from a utility role last season is junior Keri Meade, who will start at third base.

Senior Sara Rini will start in right field, while senior Christine Hannahs returns in center field. A battle rages for left field starting duties between senior Laura Beach, junior Lyndsey Slade and senior Kayla Clifton, who's been battling an ankle injury.

Sophomore Laura Greeley, who Moore said would have competed for a spot at second base on in the outfield, injured her finger and will be out until late March. “I'm looking for big some things from her this year to step in and help us,” Moore said.

Overall, “I feel pretty good about the we've played in scrimmages, we've competed real well,” Moore said. “We've gotten very good pitching, and for the most part good defense. And we're staring to hit the ball better. We'll not have as much speed as in the past, but we'll still be able to manufacture runs. Hopefully have a little bit more power than in recent years.”

Others who hope to contribute are sophomores Melissa Eggert and Erin LeGate, and freshmen LaShae Wallace, Allison Devaney, Paige Kula, Amanda Tranum and Samantha Watson.
