softball preview: BHS strong up gut

New Bearden Lady Bulldog skipper Gary Mashburn hopes his senior pitching ace and strong defensive presence up the middle will carry his team early in the seasion.

“Defensively up the middle [catcher, shortstop, second base and center field], we're pretty strong there,” Mashburn said.

Senior Rachel Rowan returns as staff ace, in addition to added duties at first and third base. “I think Rachel's a strong pitcher, I think she's going to do very well.”

Junior Meagan Fredenberg will catch. “I think she displays a positive attitude, and she is a skilled catcher and hitter," Mashburn said. Senior Jennifer Zurakowski is slated to start at second base, with freshman Kay Lee Heemsoth in the mix there. Junior Kelley Callaway will start in right field, with junior Tricia Ligon expected to see time there. Center field is in good hands with junior Ebony Reddic returning there from 2006. With speed and experience, “I've got pretty much confidence in Ebony out there,” Mashburn said, adding Reddic has swung the bat well in scrimmages. Junior Carter Davis takes over at shortstop.

Senior Laura Grzyb is among a group competing for the left field job, along with sophomore Jordan Thompson and freshman Elise Ball. Sophomore Alex Boris will play third base when Rowan pitches or plays first base, and could see time in left field, Mashburn said.

Backing up Rowan on the mound is Boris, Heesmoth and freshman Elizabeth Gray, who will also play first base or become designated hittter.
