Webb’s Meske earns Amateur award; local private school scholars honored

Dave Meske, head football coach of 2006 Division II-AA state champion Webb School, represented five Knoxville-area high school sports authorities who earned a special award Saturday.

Honored with the Amateur Football Award during the East Tennessee Chapter, National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame 2007 Awards Banquet in The Foundry Saturday, March 31, Meske spoke to the gathering.

“If we can all go out there and make a difference in someone else’s life, that’s what life is all about,” he said in conclusion to a short address.

A coaching fixture at Webb school since the early 1980s, Meske was named Division II Coach of the Year after piloting the Spartans to its third-ever football state crown last fall — second under his watch. Meske also earned the A.F. Bridges Athletic Director of the Year Award, having served as Webb AD since 1995.

Six of 31 Foundation Scholar-Athlete honorees were from Knox County’s three westside private high schools: Knoxville Catholic football players Michael Browder (runningback/defensive back, 4.04 grade point average), Patrick Kelly (wide receiver, 4.05 GPA) and Notre Dame signee Harrison Smith (runningback/defensive back, 3.82 GPA); Christian Academy players Wade Gobbell (center, 4.045 GPA) and Jeremy Miller (tight-end/linebacker, 4.0 GPA) and Webb center Ward Farmer (3.91 GPA).
