SoccerDawgs bounce back from first loss, end week 3-1 in BHS Invitational

For the first time since sipping from the cup of a 2006 Class AAA state championship last May, the Bearden boys soccer team finally tasted defeat.

But not before ending the week with a 3-1 record during the annual Bearden Invitational at Bruce Allender Field March 26-April 1.

Houston edged Bearden 2-1 Friday, March 30, but the defending champs bounced back to beat Clarksville Saturday, March 31, then finished off the annual invitational — which once again drew top teams from across the state — beating Notre Dame 1-0 Sunday, April 1, on an Alex Widmer goal.

The SoccerDawgs held an 8-4 shots-on-goal advantage against the Chattanooga-based Fighting Irish.

Bearden opened action in the BHS Invitational by edging westside rival Knoxville Catholic 2-1 Wednesday, March 28.

The host team rallied with a pair of second-half goals, one each from Ryan Radcliffe and Nathan Zivi. Goalkeeper Bryan Walker had an assist.

The SoccerDawgs ended with a 6-4 shots-on-goal edge.

Catholic’s goal came from Jamie Trombley, assisted by Tyler Gibson.

In the loss to Houston, Bearden scored on a Tom Webster goal, assisted by Aaron Schoenfeld. Houston ended with a 6-5 edge in shots-on-goal.

Crushing Clarksville 6-0 March 31, the SoccerDawgs were led by Brandon Wyrick’s hat-trick (three goals). Webster, Schoenfeld, and Kevin Davis also scored, while Schoenfeld led in assists with two. Ryan Campbell had one assist.

Catholic also closed out the invitational strong, beating Houston 2-1 April 1.

Sean Leader converted a penalty kick for the Irish, while Zach Zondlo provided the game-winning goal, assisted by Ricardo Martinez.
