Soccer Admirals reach Palmetto Cup semifinals; at BHS 8 p.m. Friday

Once again, a strong finishing kick was lacking in a key tourney game for Farragut soccer.

Dropping a 1-0 shootout to Christian Brothers of Memphis in the Palmetto Cup (S.C.) semifinals, “our chances were better than there’s, we just didn’t finish,” FHS boys head coach Wallie Culbreth said.

Culbreth did see his team finish the annual Columbia, S.C. tourney in third-place with a 3-0-1 record among a field including teams from Oklahoma and Wyoming (no loss recorded against CBHS because game went to a shootout).

The Admirals entered the week 5-0-3 overall and travel to archrival Bearden Friday, April 13. Opening kickoff at Bruce Allender Field has been moved back to 8 p.m.

Individually at the Palmetto Cup, “Kyle Beltran (back-up defender) was a great surprise,” Culbreth said. “Jake Russell and Ben Backstrom both played pretty well. Nic Paolucci, my sweeper, kept us in every game.

“Adam Greene , my goalkeeper, played outstanding, he stopped one [penalty kick] and made some great saves,” Culbreth added. “Kevin Underwood stepped up real big in the whole tournament.”

FHS GOES 3-0

Farragut begin the Cup chase April 4 with a 2-1 victory against Spring Valley S.C., the No. 5-ranked team in South Carolina Class 4A.

Robert Fisher’s goal broke a 1-1-1 tie, as Farragut led in shots-on-goal 18-10.

Dorman, ranked No. 8 in South Carolina, was blanked by FHS 3-0 April 5. Goals included Brendan Cook and Trevor Grieco. Backstrom assisted on both goals, as the Admirals had a 16-4 edge in shots-on-goal.

Airport High School (S.C.) was crushed by Farragut 10-0 Friday, April 6.

Backstrom led with a hat-trick (three goals) followed by Cook with two and Russell, Josh Grossbard, Underwood, Fisher and Aaron Stinton with one apiece.

Tyler Swift led in assists with a hat-trick of his own (three), followed by Russell’s two. Travis Bolton, Jonathan Chancey, Underwood and Greico each had one.
