DOE names safety experts for its Oak Ridge facility

Garry “Dean” Magee and William “Craig” Rife were recently named to Safety and Occupational Health Specialists positions at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office.

“Safety is the number one priority for employees at Oak Ridge facilities,” said Gerald Boyd, manager of the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office. “Both Craig and Dean bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise in that arena. Both are a welcome addition to our safety and health organization here at O-R-O.”

In these positions, both Magee and Rife will be responsible for supporting oversight of contractors’ implementation of safety and health requirements across the Oak Ridge complex.

Boyd said they also provide various forms of technical support and assistance in safety and health-related programs such as construction and demolition of buildings, hoisting and rigging activities and electrical system operations.

A native of Davenport, Iowa, Magee most recently served as Chief of Safety and Occupational Health with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District. Prior to that, in 1996, he began his federal career as a Safety and Occupational Health intern with the Department of the Army.

Magee earned a Master of Science degree in industrial engineering, technology and safety management from Texas A&M University, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Illinois University in environmental health and industrial safety.

Rife, a native of Little Rock, Ark., retired from the United States Air Force with 24 years active duty, followed by civilian employment with the U.S. Air Force, and most recently with the U.S. Army contractor, Haliburton in Kuwait. He is an active member of the professional organization of Certified Safety and Health Official Programs, and also holds a professional certification from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Rife earned a Bachelor of Science degree in professional aeronautics from Embry Aeronautical University.
