Hirst, Williams shine in ‘Big 8’ meet

Mary Hirst set a meet record in the high jump (5-feet-6) among her four medal-winning efforts for the Bearden track and field team during the Big 8 Meet — involving all schools in BHS’s Region 1-5A football region — Tuesday, April 10, at Jefferson County High School.

While Hirst led the Bearden girls to third-place among a seven-team field (Campbell County didn’t participate), Jonathan Williams did his part to help the BHS boys also finish third.

In addition to wining the 800-meter run, Williams was a leg on both Bulldog first-place relay teams: 4 X 400 and 4 X 800.

Hirst, a sophomore, also won the 300-hurdles, was second as a leg in the 4 X 200 relay and finished third in the high hurdles.

Meanwhile, Sarah Canter set a meet record in wining the discus gold medal (112-feet-10).

Amy Porter medaled in three events, finishing second as a member of the 4 X 200 relay while capturing a pair of bronze medals (third-place) in the 4 X 100 and 300-hurdles.

Sean Cunningham was first in the open 400.

Terry Johnson took second in the triple jump and third in the high jump.

Following a dual meet against Farragut at FHS’s Bill Clabo Field (held Tuesday, April 17 after press deadline), both Bearden teams will head to Anderson County High School for the Anderson County Relays today (Thursday, April 19).
