Covenant Health named in Top 100 healthcare networks in the nation

Knoxville based Covenant Health has been named one of the nation’s “Top 100 Integrated Healthcare Networks” for 2007 because of the organization’s outstanding performance as a unified and integrated healthcare network.

The announcement was made by Verispan, a Pennsylvania-based healthcare data and consulting firm whose annual report is regarded as the nation’s premier rating system for integrated healthcare networks.

Covenant Health ranked 53rd in the United States in the 10th edition of the Verispan IHN 100. It is the first time that any health system in the area has been ranked in the Top 100. The health system’s headquarters are in west Knoxville.

“Being named a top Integrated Health Network is an important achievement for Covenant Health,” Tony Spezia, president and CEO, said. “Covenant Health came into existence in nineteen ninety-six as a collaboration of two health systems and a broad spectrum of healthcare services. During our first decade, we have taken many steps toward system thinking, such as creating teams to implement quality initiatives and clinical best practices at all our hospitals, building a systemwide infrastructure for information technology and data sharing, and consolidating some of our business

“The recognition is a validation of our efforts,” he added. “It signifies that Covenant Health’s member organizations are working together effectively to deliver the highest quality of care to our patients.”

The ranking identifies the top 100 IHNs from among 570 non-specialty local and regional networks in the United States that meet critical success factors. The rating uses a 100-point scale based on health systems’ operations, clinical quality, efficiency and breadth of services. Rated categories include integration, integrated technology, contractual capabilities, outpatient utilization, financial stability, services and access, hospital utilization, and physicians.

According to Modern Healthcare magazine, “Landing a spot among the nation’s most-integrated health networks got a little harder” this year, because “a crowded field of strong contenders raised the bar... and left less room between top-scoring systems.”

“Covenant Health performed very well in comparison to other well-known healthcare systems,” Spezia said. “Our ranking is a tribute to our board of directors, our administrative leaders, physicians, and employees at all our facilities. Through planning, collaboration, and a dedication to ongoing improvement, what was once a group of individual organizations has become one of the most effective healthcare systems.

in the nation.”

Only two other health systems in Tennessee made the Top 100 list. Both are in Memphis.
