Soccer Admirals tie top Georgia team

Ties are usually irritating, but a Friday night tie against a stellar Georgia team was noteworthy for Farragut boys soccer.

“My team plays like that the rest of the year and we’ll be state champions ... my boys just played like a million dollars,” FHS head coach Wallie Culbreth said about 2-2 tie against Harrison High School April 20, ranked No. 1 among Georgia’s biggest schools in Class 6A.

“They’re one of the best teams I’ve seen in years. They have two national team players. ... We played the top team in Georgia.

“The first half we totally dominated ’em and beat ’em two-to-nothing,” Culbreth added, as the visitors scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to earn a tie. The Admirals out-shot Harrison 12-6.

Farragut entered the week with a 9-1-4 overall record.

Individually, “Robert Fisher came around and scored a great goal,” Culbreth said. “Will Beuerlein had a super header in the first half.”

Culbreth said Harrison coaches labeled FHS’s Jake Russell and Ben Backstrom “the best two forwards they’d ever seen working together.

“Adam Greene did a really good job in goal,” Culbreth added.

Missing three defensive starters — and facing the prospect of losing sweeper Nic Paolucci for the season with a knee injury while losing Trevor Grieco for the season with a broken hip — FHS nonetheless responded.

“Ryan and Aaron Stinton and Josh Grossbard did just an excellent job,” Culbreth said.

FHS 2 MARYVILLE 0

Two goals by Russell, with two Backstrom assists, were plenty, as FHS held a 12-9 shots-on-goal edge.
