BHS softball season ended by Lenoir City in 4-AAA tournament

It was a year of ups and downs for the Bearden softball team.

Under first-year head coach Gary Mashburn, the Lady Bulldogs won more district games than last year (six) but didn’t get past the first round of the District 4-AAA Tournament (9-21 final record).

Bearden lost to Lenoir City 7-5 Wednesday, May 2, to end its season. A few days before, BHS beat those same Lady Panthers 20-3.

“Everything was working perfectly for them. They had nine hits, we had eleven,” the coach said.

Bearden’s Megan Fredenberg had a two-run home run while Rachel Rowan added a single and two RBIs.

Mashburn was pleased with the effort he received from his three seniors: Rowan, Jennifer Zurakowski and Laura Grzyb.

Rowan was the team’s No. 1 pitcher, and according to Mashburn did a good job. “She pitched well over a hundred innings this year,” he said. “She didn’t win a lot of games but that was mainly because of our hitting.

“Zurakowski came on late in the season and was a consistent player for us all year,” Mashburn added. “Grzyb earned a starting spot in the outfield this year.”
