Wal-Mart Teacher of Year at FIS

A Farragut Intermediate School teacher was named Wal-Mart’s Teacher of the Year at the local level.

Kay Wellons, FIS principal, nominated Carolyn Noey in a letter dated Feb. 19:

“Would it mean a lot to you to receive a hand-written note from your fourth-grade teacher congratulating you on one of the important milestones in your life such as induction to a honor society, graduation from high school or college or even your wedding or the birth of a child? This is what Carolyn Noey does. She keeps up with many of her students over the years seeking their accomplishments in the newspaper or hearing about them by word of mouth, and she hand-writes special notes of congratulations on her former students’ special occasions. This is one of the many reasons Ms. Noey is such a special teacher.

“In addition to the long lasting bond she makes with so many of her students, she also serves her school and community in many other ways as well. For several years, she was in charge of all the technology software at our school. She inventoried and cataloged it all. She has continued to serve on the technology committee. During years when the school has completed the state required school improvement plan document, Ms. Noey has always lent assistance with surveys, charts, and graphs. Ms. Noey was also in charge of the science fair for many years. For those years, students always looked forward to completing their projects and Ms. Noey helped set up the exhibition hall for all the projects and she helped orchestrate that wonderful opportunity for young scientists to demonstrate their talent and interests.

“Ms. Noey has also been in charge of the buses at our school for almost a decade. She has scheduled teachers and students at just the right table at just the right time so the dismissal of over a thousand students runs as smoothly as possible. Everyone is loaded on a bus within fifteen minutes with their destination being a child care facility or home.

“In her spare time, Ms. Noey serves as the volunteer secretary for My Village Child Development Center. Ms. Noey also serves as a ‘baker’ for her church and is on the food team that serves the homeless or members of the church in need of food. Ms. Noey is a true model of excellent character for and service to her students and the community, and for these reasons she should be selected Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year.”

Wellons said she nominated Noey for several reasons.

“She’s been working in education so long, not only at our school but other schools as well,” she said. “But above everything else, I would say it is her dedication and her commitment. She just works, works, works, for the benefit of each child in her classroom and at the same time she will do so many things that benefit all of the students.”
