On to state: Bearden whips K-DB; Ads beat Science Hill

Despite less than stellar play, Bearden’s defending state champion SoccerDawgs earned a return trip to Murfreesboro thanks to a pair of Ryan Campbell goals.

Throw in some shutout defense, and you have a 2-0 BHS win against Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett in the Sectional final at Bearden’s Bruce Allender Field Saturday, May 19.

“I didn’t think we played real well at all,” BHS head coach Eric Turner said, as his SoccerDawgs take a 24-2-0 record to Murfreesboro for this week’s state tournament. “... We were real, real tired today. It’s been a tough week for us.”

Farragut also advanced to this week’s Class AAA state tourney by breaking a scoreless halftime tie and winning 2-0 at Science Hill Saturday. More on the Admirals later in this story.

BEARDEN ADVANCES

Up 1-0 at halftime on a Campbell scoring boot (assisted by Aaron Attkisson) roughly five minutes into the game, the SoccerDawgs sealed the deal midway through the final 40 minutes.

Alex Wilkerson sent a pass to the breaking Campbell in front of the K-DB net, and the sophomore knocked home a header from about five yards out.

Individually, “I thought Jordan Hanks played great today,” Turner said about the senior. “And Ryan’s really been stepping up the last three or four games.”

Defensively, “In the past two games, Patrick Harmony, Trevor Cook and Brandon Wyrick did a great job giving up only one goal to Farragut,” Turner said. “And, of course, [goalkeeper] Bryan [Walker].”

Junior forward Tom Webster said Saturday “was not our best game at all. But we came out and got it done, that’s what matters.”

Junior Aaron Schoenfeld added, “We played poor, but good teams can win on bad days, and we proved it today.”

FARRAGUT ADVANCES

Robert Fisher’s goal from about 25 yards out midway into the second half got FHS (16-3-5) on the board (assisted by Jake Russell).

Russell controlled a loose ball and sealed the issue with a goal from about 10-yards out with roughly 10 minutes remaining.
