Johnson, Zimmerman, Harrison all claim multi-state crowns; Claire, Webb, CAK relays No. 1
Alan Sloan - Thu, May, 31, 2007
Compared to pressure of basketball, track and field is a breeze for Glory Johnson. Or at least not as hectic, even though Johnson captured Division II state crowns in the long jump (18-feet-8.50), 100-meter dash (:12.08) and 200 (:24.40) during last week’s meet in Murfreesboro.

“I’m probably more stressed in basketball, but track helps me do a lot of things — stay in shape,” said Johnson, a 6-foot-3 junior All-American basketball post who led Webb to the Division II hoop state crown in March. The 16-year-old led her Lady Spartans track and field team to fourth-place (76).
Meanwhile, Knoxville Catholic two-sport standout Harrison Smith added a high jump state title in Class A/AA (6-04.00) to his decathlon state crown (6,230). He led KCHS to third as a team (41).
Smith, a Notre Dame University football signee, took second in the triple jump and third in the long jump.
Lady Spartan distance runner Amber Zimmerman was a double state champ: 1600 (5:14.01) and 3200 (11:27.12). Teammate Claire Smith was shot put state champ (37-08.25), while finishing third in the pentathlon and 300 hurdles, and fifth in the 100 hurdles.
Christian Academy’s 4 X 800 relay girls won the A/AA crown (9:49.93), as did the Webb 4 X 200 boys in Division-II (1:29.07).
Other finishers — CAK: Mary Thompson second, 800; Bekah Swanson sixth, 1600; Alyssa Bryson seventh, 800; 4 X 400 girls relay, fifth; CAK girls team seventh. KCHS: Kevin Schoonover sixth, pole vault; T.J. Franklin sixth, shot put, eighth, discus; Mallory Mrozik, ninth, pentathlon. Webb: 4 X 400 boys, third; Ernest Whitaker fifth, 100 dash; 4 X 100 boys, fifth; John Anderson seventh, high jump.
