CCS moms team with InterFaith

A handful of moms from Concord Christian School are working with InterFaith Health Clinic to make Valentine’s Day even sweeter this year.

The women have volunteered to deliver pre-purchased Bundt cakes for the clinic’s “Sweets for the Sweet” fundraiser Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 13 and 14.

For a $50 donation, cakes baked by Nothing Bundt Cakes in Bearden will be personally delivered by area volunteers, including the CCS moms. Each donation not only covers the cost of the cakes, but also will pay for one patient visit at the clinic, according to organizers.

It is the ninth year for the event, which last year sold between 500 and 600 cakes and raised $25,000, said Missy Standifer, Interfaith Health Clinic’s director of development and public relations.

This year’s goal is $35,000, which could be accomplished by selling an additional 200 cakes, she added.

This fundraiser provides “a wonderful gift to give anybody,” Standifer said. “It is really thoughtful, and can be given as a romantic gesture or can be given to business [colleagues] or co-workers.”

Standifer and her family attend First Baptist Concord and her children formerly attended the school, so she knew of several school mothers who might be willing to help.

“We need drivers,” she said, noting the cakes will be delivered within Knox County limits. “And these ladies are willing to help with that.

“It really does take a village to deliver all over Knox County.”

The InterFaith Health Clinic, located in downtown Knoxville at 315 Gill Ave., was established in 1991 to specifically serve individuals who work but don’t have health care insurance, the organization’s web site stated. It provides comprehensive access to dental, medical and mental health care, along with prescription drug services.

Patient charges are based on a sliding fee scale.

Standifer explained most patients pay around $20, with the rest of the fees being made up through donations, such as the ones raised through the upcoming fundraiser, along with support from individuals, churches, city and county governments, civic organizations and United Way of Greater Knoxville among others.

“This really is a ‘feel-good’ fund-raiser all the way around,” she said about “Sweets for the Sweet.” “It helps working men and women receive health care, is a wonderful gift and is also tax-deductible.”

Reservations for Sweets for the Sweet must be made by Thursday, Feb. 8. Drivers also are still being sought.
