Smoky Mountain Mamas 50-54 hoop team

These Mamas reached the highest peak of Mount National Championship.

Led on the floor by captain Sandy Pevey of Concord, the Smoky Mountain Mamas 50-to-54-year-old basketball team won the national championship, finishing unbeaten at The Senior Olympics Summer National Senior Games in Louisville, Ky. June 23-25.

Winning all eight of its games among a 19-team field, the Mamas captured the national crown thanks to a 33-23 win against a San Diego, Calif. team in the title game June 25.

“This was a big thrill, we prepared well for it this time,” said Pevey, a starting guard in the three-on-three half-court format, where games are broken into a pair of 12-minute halves. “We felt real good going in.”

The Mamas earned its trip to Louisville thanks to winning the 2006 State Senior Olympic crown (qualifying is one year previous to the national event).

“We were confident that we could win, but, you never know how the ball bounces,” Pevey said, alluding to a two-point squeaker the Mamas eeked out in the semifinals, 38-36, against “a team from New Mexico.”

Many of these same Mamas were on the 2005 team that finished national runner-up in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Lacking depth in 2005 despite its Silver Medal finish, “We had only three players playing,” Pevey said. “We had five players, but two of them were playing softball.

Other team members are Jerri Crockett, Cheryle Merritt, Darlene Parton, Edwina Burns, Diane Graham and Rose Boll. The team is coached by Pat Murphy.

“Darlene Parton is the go-to post player,” Pevey said. The other starter is Burns, who “does anything and everything, she’s our quick player.”

MAMAS SILVER

The Smoky Mountain Mamas 60-64 team finished as national runners-up.

Team members are captain Susie Hargis and Jo Farmer of Farragut, Billie Duncan, Neak Alexander, Anna Bright, Emily Ball, Madge Susong and Mary Kelly.

In the 65-to-69 age division, the Mamas finished eighth nationally. (See adjacent pictures and caption)
