• Tryouts for Farragut High School baseball will be held beginning at 6 p.m., Thursday, July 29, at FHS’s John Heatherly Field.

• Farragut Middle School Girls Soccer news includes: an optional scrimmage at Hickory Creek Fields every Wednesday night in July from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Be sure you come ready to play with your soccer cleats, shin guards, ball and water. Directions to field: Hickory Creek East: Take I-40 to exit 369 (Watt Road). Go north on Watt Road approximately 3/4 mile and turn right onto Buttermilk Road. Take first left onto Hickory Creek Road. Field is approximately 1/4 mile on left. Optional Smoky Mountain Soccer Camp: July 23-27. See Web site for camp flyer for registration information: www.smsc-knox.org/index.html. All girls interested in trying out for FMS Girls Soccer are encouraged to attend these activities since they will offer the opportunity to improve fitness, skills and teamwork to prepare for the upcoming season. Mandatory FMS tryouts: from 5:45 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 9, and from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday Aug. 11. Location to be determined. Be on the field ready to play at designated time. Plan to arrive a few minutes early to get checked in. Complete forms and receive tryout number before entering the field. All girls must attend tryouts. Important middle school soccer dates: regular season starts (and/or practice games) Monday, Sept. 10; league games start Monday, Sept. 17. Knox County Middle School Soccer Tournament is Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 27-28. (Note this is the second weekend of Knox County Schools Fall Break. You will need to plan to be in town). • With upgrades coming in the press box, new 25-second play clocks and possibly a new message board among improvements planned for Farragut High School’s Bill Clabo Field, program officials hope these improvement are complete by jamboree football time. As one host site for the 2007 Knoxville Orthopedic Kick-off Classic, FHS will host five quarters (10 teams) beginning at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 17. Match-ups are as follows: first quarter, Powell versus CAK (7 p.m.); second quarter, Webb versus Karns; third quarter, Fulton versus West, (halftime activities); fourth quarter, Bearden versus Catholic; fifth quarter, Farragut versus South-Doyle. Central High School will host eight other Knox County teams (four quarters) beginning at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 16. Having been held at Neyland Stadium in recent years, “U-T is doing some work over there, so that’s not available this year for the jamboree,” FHS head coach Eddie Courtney said.

• Abrams Falls Trail is the site of a July 14 hike in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The 5-mile moderate hike will feature mountain laurel, rhododendrons, hemlocks, wildflowers and pine trees before seeing a beautiful 20-foot waterfall. Hikers will meet at 10 a.m. at Cades Cove parking area, then proceed 4 miles to the trailhead. Bring water and lunch (swimming is optional). • Summer Golf Camp at Concord Park Golf Course is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, July 16-18, for ages 9 to 14. Cost is $115.00 per child. Instructor is PGA professional Keith McElroy. To register, call 865-966-9103.

• Club Championship at Concord Park Golf Course is a tournament open to all junior golfers with tee times starting at 4 p.m., Saturday, July 28. Cost is $20 per child (includes food after the round). Format is 9-hole, individual stroke play. Please note: Caddies will be allowed. Age divisions: Boys: 7 & under, 8-10, 11-14; Girls: 8-10 and 11-14. For more information, call 865-966-9103.

• Top finishers at the TGA Junior Tour Concord Park 9-hole tournament June 29 included Bo Fischer of Knoxville, second-place +2 (38) in Micro Boys 8-9; Micro Boys 10-11, Seth Gettelfinger of Knoxville, second, -3 (33), Keeton Susong of Knoxville, fourth, +5 (41).

• Farragut High School softball tryouts for the 2008 season will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, July 23-25. Girls interested in trying out need to be in proper softball attire when arriving. For more information, contact FHS head coach David Moore at 865-947-5720.

• Tryouts for the Bearden High School baseball team will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, July 23, through Wednesday, July 25, at BHS’s Phil Garner Field. All participants must bring copy of their insurance card. For more information, call BHS head coach Matt Buckner at 865-368-3141.

• Knoxville Thunder baseball try-out camp for ages 9 to 14 will take place July 28 at Inskip ballpark. Obtain an application from www.thunderbaseball.

• Impact USA, one of Knoxville's premiere soccer clubs, has announced a free Mini Soccer Camp program for boys and girls ages 6 to 10. The camp will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday evenings at the Impact Soccer Complex, 2809 Ball Camp Byington Road across from Smoky Mountain Tennis Academy. There are no fees or obligations to attend. The camp is designed to promote soccer in Knoxville and give players an opportunity to discover the Impact coaching staff and the Impact style of training.
