Marlins heroes highlight CBFO Softball 13-to-18 season


Air-conditioned press boxes and concrete paths connecting each dugout highlighted cosmetic and functional improvements to both CBFO Softball Fields (Northshore Drive) for the 2007 season. As for game action, the 13-to-18 League championship tourney came down to Marlins regular season champ at 13-1 versus Padres, with late-inning heroics lifting the Marlins to the title.

Catcher Samina Ahmah (pictured right) smacked a walk-off solo home run over the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 1-0 Marlins win.

Winning pitcher Mallory Perkins, League Cy Young Award winner as top pitcher, allowed just one hit.

Losing pitcher Leah Hutcheson (pictured above right) allowed just two hits, as the Padres were also runners-up in the regular season (11-3).

Other honorees: Leading Hitter Award, Lauren Chase of the Devil Rays; Most Improved Award, Jenny Kerksick, Cardinals, and Spirit Award, Courtney Kubeja of the Indians and Lindsey West of the Padres.

Following is an individual breakdown of statistics from the 13-to-18 League in 2007:

BATTING AVERAGE

Courtney Kubeja led the league in batting average, .515, followed by 13 others who hit at least .400: Calissa Coffey (Reds) .469; Mallory Perkins .462; Clarke Kelly (Orioles) .455; Natalie Godfrey (Devil Rays) .440; Chase .435; Jackie Ingmand (Padres) .429; Rachel Natzke (Indians) .429; Jillian Gauld (Orioles) .429; Natalie Orme (Rockies) .414; Jackie Twigg (Indians) .412; Lauren Cecil (Reds) .409; Sara Burklin (Indians) .400 and Adrianne Cuxart (Devil Rays) .400.

HOME RUNS

Gauld led in home runs with three, followed by Kelly, Paige West and Carly Wigren (Reds) with two each.

RUNS BATTED IN

Lindsey West led the league in RBIs with 25, followed by Courtney Kubeja with 19, Ingmand, Kristen McKee (Marlins) and Caroline Richmond (Rockies) with 18 apiece. Sarah Pipkin (Indians) had 17, while Calissa Coffey (Reds) added 16 and Ashley Johnston (Padres) 15.

STOLEN BASES

Kaylor Martin (Orioles) led in stolen bases with 43, followed by Lana Shaw (Padres) with 35 and Courtney Kubeja 34. Perkins and Twigg each swiped 31, with Kathryn Machiela (Marlins) taking 29. Brittany Grogan (Rockies) had 28, with Kelly and Erin Williams swiping 27 and Leann Hutcheson (Padres) 26. Kristen McKee (Marlins) stole 25.

RUNS SCORED

Shaw led in runs scored with 29, followed by Leann Hutcheson with 22, and Grogan and Lindsey West 21 each.

ON BASE PERCENTAGE

Perkins led in on base percentage at .769, followed by Mandi Fricks (Padres) at .722, Grogan at .718, Erin Williams .706 and Kelly .703.

PITCHING

Among starting pitchers, Mallory Perkins led in lowest earned run average (1.11 in 65 innings), followed by Natzke (2.15), Leah Hutcheson (2.24), Kayleigh Milas of the Indians (2.64) and Kendall Knisley of the Padres (2.78).

Perkins also was a runaway leader in strikeouts (138), wins (17) and shutouts (six) while allowing the fewest walks (three).

Other strikeout leaders were Natzke (51), Cuxant (48), Erin Williams (46) and Cassie Williams (45).

Natzke was second in wins with nine, followed by Leah Hutcheson and Erin Williams with eight each, and Knisley and Cassie Williams six apiece.

Knisley, Milas, Joy Webb (Rockies) and Cassie Williams each pitched a solo no-hit game. Natzke also pitched three shutouts.

GOLD GLOVES

Seventeen players received Gold Glove recognition: Coffey (infield/outfield), Wigren (shortstop/catcher), Kelly (infield/pitcher), Kubeja (infield), Hannah Kline (outfield), Ingmand (shortstop), Webb (shortstop/pitcher), Milas (infield/pitcher), Martin (infield/outfield), Kerry Memory (shortstop), Leann Hutcheson (second base), Lindsey West (catcher), Madison Gray (infield), Paige West (infield/outfield), Burklin (infield), Tiffany Farmer (infield/outfield) and Whitney Kubeja (infield).
