Marguerats celebrate ‘64’
Farragut residents Peggy and Elbert Marguerat recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary while attending the wedding of their grandson.

Many family members joined in the celebration at the Raleigh Rose Garden in North Carolina. The group included the couple’s five children: Randy Marguerat, Mike Marguerat, Nancy Nelson, Pat Sloan and Al Marguerat.

The Marguerats moved to the Concord area decades before the town of Farragut was incorporated. When the Thornton Farm was subdivided in the mid-50s, the couple purchased two lots.

By 1957 they had moved their family of seven from a small flattop house in Oak Ridge into a spacious new rancher off Thornton Drive. They quickly became imm-ersed in the community where all five children attended Farragut schools.

The family joined Crichton Memorial Baptist Church, where Elbert became a deacon and Peggy began to teach Sunday School.

In the early 60s, they were part of the membership that voted to move the church to Kingston Pike and rename it First Baptist Church, Concord.

Elbert served on several building committees as the church tried to keep up with the growth of West Knox County.

After 30 years Elbert retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory but continued to work as an engineer in North Carolina and Colorado. Eventually they returned to the house off Thornton Drive where he began his own business, Marguerat Engineering.

The house has undergone several remodeling and painting projects but it still stands as a gathering place for the entire family, including many of the 10 grandchildren and their spouses.
