Tenn. Do-Not-Call Register tops more than 3 million registered users

NASHVILLE – More than 3 million Tennessee telephone numbers are listed on the Tennessee Regulatory Author-ity’s Do-Not-Call Register that protects them from unwanted telemarketing phone calls, TRA chairman Eddie Roberson said.

The total number of registrations – 3,066,968 as of July 31 – is a milestone for the Do-Not-Registry that was established in 1999 by the Tennessee General Assembly. The program aims to eliminate unnecessary and unwanted telemarketing calls.

“The public popularity and effectiveness of this program is evidenced by this enrollment milestone,” Roberson said. “The TRA’s goal is to ensure the program works as intended by the General Assembly.”

The Do-Not-Call Register is open to residential telephone customers who may list their traditional and wireless phone numbers. Businesses are not eligible for the register.

Those wishing to add their lines to the list may go to the TRA’s Web site,, or call the agency toll-free line, 800-342-8359.

The law that established the Do-Not-Call Register also has a few exemptions. Telephone solicitors may still call in response to an express invitation or permission by the person being called.

Solicitors may call on behalf of a not-for-profit organization if the call is made by a member of that organization.

Soliciting also is allowed if the caller has had a business relationship during the previous 12 months with the person being called.

The mission of the TRA is to promote the public interest by balancing the interests of utility consumers and providers.
