Meske: Webb further along than expected to start regular season

Entering the 2007 season, the Webb Spartans know that its strength is the running game.

Behind senior running backs Derek Boyce and Brandt Campbell, the Spartans cruised to an easy 14-0 win versus Karns in the Knoxville Orthopedic Kick-Off Classic Friday, Aug. 17, at Farragut’s Bill Clabo Field.

“Offensively I thought we played real well,” Webb head coach David Meske said. “We ran the ball well. They are two guys that can be big playmakers for us.”

Boyce got the Spartans on the scoreboard on the second play from scrimmage with a 68-yard touchdown run. Campbell scored the second touchdown of the game the following drive. The duo combined for 146 yards on six carries.

“They have done a great job all fall,” Meske said about his senior backs. “They are both playmakers. They both have the speed to score from anywhere on the field. Hopefully we can get them down the field and let them make plays.”

With only three returning starters to both the offense and defense, the Spartans are a young team. With freshman quarterback Parker Wormsley, Meske knows that there will be ups and downs, but as of now the coach is pleased with where his team is at.

“I’m very happy,” Meske said. “I didn’t think we would be as far along as what we are. Offensively I think we are ahead of where I thought we would be. Defensively we are not where we need to be, but we are gaining strides in a hurry.”

The Spartans have had scrimmages against West, Kingston, Gibbs, Wartburg and Seymour.

“All the scrimmages have gone well for us,” Meske said. “I think we have been competitive in every scrimmage and we played well.”

But Meske feels there is always room for improvement. “The big concern at the beginning of our scrimmages was defensively, being able to tackle better,” he said. “We have improved on that a whole lot and I think we are going to get better and better.”

Webb opens its season Friday, Aug. 31, at Austin-East.
