Up-and-down VolleyDogs whip Fulton, fall to ORHS

Early into the season, the Bearden VolleyDogs are looking for a little consistency out of its young team. Bearden split on the week after defeating Fulton 3-0 Tuesday, Aug. 28 but lost to Oak Ridge 3-0 Thursday, Aug. 30.

“We are real young and we can’t seem to get it,” head coach Jennifer Allen said. “Sometimes we play real well and sometimes we don’t play well at all. When our seniors are really on their game we play really well, and they are pretty much our leaders and we kind of go as they go.”

The VolleyDogs (7-5 record entering the week) handled Fulton easily in the match as freshman Tara Robertson and senior Brianna Rittenhouse had solid matches.

“We beat Fulton pretty well,” Allen said. “Everybody played a lot. Tara had a pretty good game and so did Brianna.”

Bearden ran into trouble against Oak Ridge and couldn’t bounce back. Playing without senior Natalie Birdsall didn’t help matters either.

“She had her wisdom teeth taken out that morning,” Allen said. “We missed her and we did not play very well.”

As the young season is underway, the VolleyDogs are hoping some of its younger players will step up as the season progresses.

“We are starting a freshman, two sophomores and then the juniors that are playing are all fairly new to varsity ball,” Allen said. “We just need to get more consistency out of them.”
