Farragut girls cross country strong early

Alex Newby is already out of the gate quickly in 2007 for the Farragut girls cross country team.

Only a sophomore, Newby, All-Region as a freshman last year, finished second (19.60) among 11 full teams at the Cherokee Classic in Knoxville Saturday, Sept. 1.

Along with teammates Teri Winborne, a sophomore who was 16th (21.55) and junior Margo Sneed, finishing 19th (22.15), Farragut took third as a team (86) behind champ Dobyns-Bennett (58) and runner-up Webb (70).

“These three girls have been running together all summer, they’ve been training together, they’ve trained the last couple of weeks as a group working to be the top three,” FHS head coach Chelsea Jacobs said. “Two girls are nipping right at their heels, making a good, solid top five.”

Those two are senior captain Meredith Lindley and junior Joanna Cannata. Allison Woodford “is my top freshman, she was top 30 in the meet,” Jacobs said.

“We would like to finish where we were, if not higher, than where we finished last year in the region [second]. And improve on where we finished in state [top 10].”

Jacobs said the FHS boys “have a lot of depth this year” with 10 competitive runners.

With Farragut finishing fourth in region last fall, “We really want to improve on that, and qualify for state as a team,” the FHS skipper said.

The Admirals took fifth Saturday among a 27-team field.

Senior Chris Wright, a state qualifier last fall, led the Admiral charge Saturday with a third-place finish (16:40). Senior Jacob Gibson took 29th (18:05).

Jacobs said with junior Kenta Nolin, senior Michael McCormick and sophomore Kyle Branson, “I’m looking for those three to step up and take a role as leaders on my team.”
