Bearden boys cross country strong early

The Bearden boys cross country team looks to have a strong 2007 season. Led by seniors Ben Fennell and Gregg Rader, the boys team hopes to be one of the three teams to qualify for the Class AAA state tournament.

“The boys team will be pretty good,” head coach Steven Prince said. “I think we will be fighting with Farragut and Maryville for the number two and three spots. Too bad only three teams get out. Oak Ridge will probably be first because they are two time defending state champion, but its going to be close between us and Farragut and Maryville for two and three.”

Radar finished fourth at the Cherokee Classic in Knoxville Saturday morning, Sept. 1. As a team, the BHS boys were third.

Aside from Fennell and Rader, junior Sam Shaunessy looks to contribute as one of the team’s top three runners. Shaunessy was sixth at Cherokee. Tyler Freeman, Billy Miller, Silas Harness, Drew Crawford and Peter Migun will be competing for the next four spots.

Prince is impressed with the advances the team has made as a whole, but the top three runners made great strides this off-season. “Gregg Rader ran summer track and he ran a 4:35 mile,” he said. “Sam Shaunessy and Ben Fennell really improved.”

Referring to both his boys and girls teams, “Our goal is just to run as hard as we can and try qualify ... for the state and see if it happens,” Prince said.

LADY BULLDOGS

Having lost three-time All-State runner Jenny Randolph to graduation, the Bearden Lady Bulldogs are rebuilding.

“We lost Jenny Randolph and I lost two scholarship runners off my team last year,” Prince said. “I’ve got a small girls team this year so I don’t know exactly how good we will be.”

The top five runners are senior Sarah Hope Jones, junior Ruth Hahn, sophomores Lily Winchester and Molly Shankles, and freshman Alli Migun. “I think Sarah Hope probably has improved a lot,” Prince said. “She really came on in track for us.”
