KCHS boys golf hot early

Knoxville Catholic’s boys golf team looks to make school history again with its second consecutive state tourney appearance in 2007.

And with a 15-2 record entering the week, “It’s quite a nice golf year so far,” KCHS head coach Colin Moskal said, adding his five top golfers are averaging under 39 per nine holes.

Mike Markiewicz, team No. 1 and second in the region last season, joined No. 2 Kelly Booth and Zach Zondlo to qualify for the Tennessee State Junior tournament this year.

Parker Proctor, team No. 3, broke a nine-hole school record with a 31 during an early season match at Oak Ridge Country Club in which the team set an all-time low mark, Moskal said. Nick Willenburg, team No. 4, holds the low scoring average so far in 2007. Jack Gillespie is the No. 5 player, while Patrick Proctor provides key depth.

Though Moskal said the Lady Irish have “struggled” with an under .500 record so far this season, they did win a match at Gettysvue Polo, Golf and Country Club Thursday, Aug. 30.

Leading the way was a school record 37 from team No. 1 Katie Letsinger, a state qualifier in 2006. Freshmen Alex Lowe and Alec Cunningham round out the Lady Irish team.
