Smartt, Eisenacher lead 5K push

John Smartt and Faye Eisenacher set the inspirational pace during the Farragut Fall 5K Run, Fun Walk and Pet Parade 2007, presented by Farragut West Knox Chamber of Commerce.

Meanwhile, two former U.S. Olympians set a pace of their own.

Smartt is an 88-year-old from West Knoxville who has made a habit of winning multiple gold medals during Senior Olympic competitions.

He and Eisenacher, an 81-year-old Farragut resident who is an annual medal winner at the Farragut run, both earned gold medals in their 70-99 age bracket at the 5K run (Smartt 39:05, Eisenacher 35:44). They were among about 277 runners and walkers performing in and around Mayor Bob Leonard Park Saturday, Sept. 22.

Other Farragut winners and top finishers were Eric Nicholls, 63, champ in the Male 60-69 group (22:22); Louis LeMarche, 72, third in Male 70-79, Dot LeMarche, second in Female 60-69; Bob Markli, 57, second in Male 50-59, Ramy DeFilippo, 10, third in Female 14-and-under and Kyle Jacobs, 9, third in Male under 14.

Other West Knox Countians with top finishes included former Olympian Jearl Clark, 41, champion in the Female Masters (21:53). Clark is two-time Olympic Gold Medalist as a leg on the U.S. 4 X 400-meter relay team during the Atlanta Games in 1996 and Sydney Games in 2000.

Treniere Clement, 25, champion in Female 20-29 (21:53), is a three-time U.S. champ in the 1500.

Ron Manis of Knoxville, 41, was Male Open Overall champ (17:57), followed by Knoxvillians Bradley Adams, 29 and Craig Schwartz, 45. Jasmin Keller of Knoxville, 37, was Female Open Overall champ (18:21).

Knoxville’s Kate Schulte, 44, was third.
