• Farragut Intermediate School PTA will sponsor its annual Fall Clothing Drive through Friday, Oct. 12. Donations will benefit the Knox County Clothing Center, which provides clothing assistance to students who are enrolled in a Knox County School and are unable to receive help from other sources. PTA will be accepting clothes (new or used) from sizes infants through XXL. Community members are invited to drop off donations in the FIS school lobby during school hours.

• The new 15,000-square-foot Knoxville campus for The University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s College of Pharmacy opened recently. For more information, visit

• Farragut High School Education Foundation will host a phone-a-thon Monday, Oct. 29, and Tuesday, Oct. 30, and is actively seeking volunteers to work two-hour shifts. Time slots are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and from 8 to 10 p.m. Money will go toward the purchase of equipment for the newly renovated Science lab and the Visual and Performing Arts departments at the high school. • Paideia Academy will host its second annual “Run for the Classics” 5K Run and 1-Mile Family Fun Walk Saturday, Oct. 20. Event will be held at the Pellissippi State Technical Community College’s Community Trails, across from the J. Goins building on the Hardin Valley Road campus. Race will begin at 9 a.m. with the one-mile fun walk kicking off at 9:05 a.m. Race-day registration will open at 8 a.m. Pre-registration fees are $25 for an individual or $85 for a team of four (plus $20 per additional teammate) for either event. Registration forms are available at The Runner’s Market, New Balance, YMCA’s Farragut and West Side branches or the school office. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top overall runner, as well as the first-place male and first-place female. Proceeds go to Paideia Academy’s scholarship fund, which provides need-based financial assistance to students who might not otherwise be able to attend the school. • Cadet Matthew Arthur “Joe” LeSage, son of Dennis and Carrie LeSage, has completed Cadet Basic Training at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. LeSage graduated from Farragut High School in 2007. He plans to graduate from West Point in 2007 and will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

• Navy Seaman Recruit Harry A. Larson, a 2006 graduate of Farragut High School, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Larson completed a variety of training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. Capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations,” an exercise that gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ‘’Navy’’ flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor.

• Erik Tait a graduate from Farragut High School, recently graduated from Humber College in Toronto, Ontario with honors. He was also awarded the Comedy Green Room Director’s Award for Excellence for his contributions to the art of stand-up comedy. Tait was most recently featured on XM Radio.

• Twenty-seven top students have been recognized to the summer semester dean’s list at Pellissippi State Technical Community College. To be included on the list, a student must take a full course load and earn a minimum 3.5 grade point average. Honorees include Craig Brian Green, Kellie Keyes, Annatasia Danielle Miller, Anthony Joseph Upchurch and Patrick Emmett Rice.

• Roane State Community College will hold its annual open house for area high school juniors, seniors and their parents from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Roane County campus, Harriman. Representatives from academic departments, financial aid and admissions will be available to answer questions. Visitors are asked to register in the theater lobby. • Smoky Mountain Regional College and Career Fair will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, in the Student Recreation Center at Pellissippi State Technical Community College’s Hardin Valley Road campus. Representatives from more than 100 colleges nationwide plan to participate. SMCA will host a drawing to give away a minimum of three $500 scholarships to high school seniors. To be eligible, seniors must submit an application at the event. Seniors should see their high school guidance counselor for the form. Scholarship can be used to attend any college. • The Episcopal School of Knoxville will host its fourth annual Boarding School Fair from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Bishop Center on the school’s campus. Families will have the chance to visit with representatives of 37 of the nation’s finest boarding schools. Admission is free of charge. • Ross Bagwell Sr. placed his 1991 Mercedes Benz 560SEL on the showroom floor to help the Pellissippi State Foundation raise money for the new Bagwell Center for Media and Art. The facility, located on the Pellissippi Campus of Pellissippi State Technical Community College, opened for classes this semester.

Bagwell called upon longtime friend Sam Furrow, owner of Mercedes-Benz of Knoxville, to help with the sale of the Mercedes. Furrow contributed to raising money for the college by donating his business’ showroom to display the car. The Mercedes was sold to a Chicago resident soon after being put in the showroom, and Bagwell presented the Foundation with a check last month for $22,000. The college is in the midst of a major gifts campaign, Connecting Communities, Changing Lives, and has raised $4.65 million toward the $6 million goal. • The Episcopal School of Knoxville will host its Second Annual ES “5” K Run and Fall Festival Saturday, Oct. 13. The 5K run and one-mile fun run will begin at 9 a.m. at the Cove Subdivision directly behind the Pinnacle Theaters in Turkey Creek. Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the school’s wooded campus. Admission to the festival is one non-perishable food item, which will be donated to the food pantry at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Registrations are now being accepted for the run, which costs $20 in advance and $25 the day of the race. To register, pick up forms at either location of the Runner’s Market or New Balance athletic stores or at the school, register online at or at the run starting point at 7:45 a.m. the day of the race.
