Bunn medalist, Reeves, Rodgers next in region as FHS boys reached state

With teammates battling in a sudden-death playoff for medalist honors at the Boys Region 2-AAA Golf Tournament, it pretty much goes without saying that Farragut walked away with the team title.

Especially with the third-place finisher also wearing Admiral Navy blue.

Davis Bunn, a sophomore, beat senior teammate Michael Reeves in a one-hole playoff Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Fox Den Country Club. Both golfers finished 18 holes at 2-under-par 70. Farragut’s sophomore Brandon Rodgers was third (73).

“Michael and Davis were the only two people under par ... I was happy for Davis,” said FHS head coach Mike Driver, whose Admirals won its first team region crown since 2004 and earned its first Class AAA state tourney berth in three years. “Having the top three scorers was something great for the kids.

“We’re just real excited about getting back in the state, something these guys have worked hard for this year,” Driver added. “I didn’t think we’d win by 31 strokes at Fox Den. They just played a tremendous round.”

Farragut beat runner-up and 2006 region champ Halls by a whopping 31 strokes (290-321).

Junior Elliott Wickenden shot 77 to finish sixth. Sophomore Hayden Anderson, 2007 District 4-AAA champ, shot 80.

Led by Eric Schwartz’s 83, Bearden took fourth (342), 12 strokes behind No. 3 Oak Ridge (330). Other Bulldog scores were Owen Shirk 85, Jeff Slack 86, Brad Bartram 88 and Jeff Maier 94.

The Class AAA state tournament for both boys and girls was held Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 16-17 at Old Fort Golf Club in Murfreesboro (after press deadline).
