Oak Ridge ends Volleyball Admirals’ season

The often-visited Oak Ridge curse on Farragut High athletics continued Tuesday, Oct. 16.

But in this sport it was unexpected, as the powerful Lady Admirals volleyball team — despite rallying from a 2-0 game deficit to force a fifth game — was upset by the ORHS Lady Wildcats in Region 2-AAA semi-final play at Karns High School, ending its season at 45-9.

The two-time defending region champion Lady Ads were 10 points from elimination in game three, trailing 15-9, before rallying to win 25-21 then breezing along 25-14 in game four.

Farragut head coach David Moore said the blocking of district league and tournament MVP Amanda Mitchell “kinda got us going in the third game.”

But in game 5 (played to 15), serving errors were costly in a 15-11 FHS loss. Mitchell had 16 kills and seven blocks for FHS. Cara Gregg added 12 kills, while Ariel Lebert had eight kills and four aces. Kylann Scheidt added 21 assists and six kills. Natalia Hayes had three kills.

Seniors Mitchell, Marian Curtner, Diana Deer and Amber Pyle played their final games as Lady Admirals. “Marian fought through a lot … she’s had a great senior year,” Moore said. “Amber is a good passer and can play at the next level if she wants to. I’m proud of what she’s done. Diana’s had a wonderful year … she’s a heck of a volleyball player, excellent passer and server, one of our team leaders. Amanda obviously is one of our huge leaders. She’s an excellent blocker and hitter, she’s a Division One player.”
