ourview: Woodson

Congratulations to State Sen. Jamie Woodson (R-Knoxville) who was presented the “Senator of the Year Award” by the Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence recently at its 2007 Annual Awards Luncheon.

“The Coalition is proud to honor Senator Woodson with the State Senator of the Year Award,” said Kathy Walsh, Executive Director, Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence.

The Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence is a private, statewide nonprofit organization comprised of community leaders that “share a common vision of ending violence in the lives of Tennesseans through public policy, advocacy, education and activities that increase the capacity of programs and communities to address violence.

“Senator Woodson was primary sponsor in the Senate of the bill requiring payment for forensic rape exams. Passage of this bill means that rape victims will no longer have to bear the financial burden in addition to the emotional burden for the crime inflicted upon them,” Walsh added. “Senator Woodson’s continued support for ending domestic and sexual violence in Tennessee is greatly appreciated by the Coalition and its members across the state.”

“I am deeply humbled by this honor,” said Woodson. “As members of our General Assembly, we are constantly looking for ways to end domestic and sexual violence. Tennessee is fortunate to have such an outstanding organization like the Coalition that is helping victims and educating the public about this important issue.”
