In the rain, Bearden girls bounce West

When many East Tennessee region semi-final soccer games were getting rescheduled due to heavy rains, the Bearden Lady Bulldogs soccer team was determined to get its game against West in despite the poor weather.

Even with puddles swamping the majority of the field, the state-ranked Lady SoccerDawgs defeated West 5-0 Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Bearden’s Bruce Allender Field.

“As long as there weren’t thunderstorms we were going to play because at this time of the year its hard enough playing Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday,” Bearden head coach Eric Turner said. “So we were going to take our chances today and play Thursday and have [Wednesday] off.”

Bearden started the game on the north side of the field, the half that was in worse shape because of the rain. Bearden played the puddles right and took a 4-0 lead into halftime. Bearden senior Jenni Gordon scored the opening goal a minute into play on an assist from senior Lindsay Pompilio, who lost a shoe in a puddle while making the pass.

Four minutes later, freshman Samantha Turner scored on an assist from sophomore Ashley Howarth to give Bearden a 2-0 advantage.

Freshman Beth Aaser scored on an assist from Turner at the 25:16 mark. Junior Amy Porter scored the fourth goal on an assist from Gordon with 13:37 remaining in the half.

“I thought we did good, especially with the conditions we had,” Samantha Turner said. “We still played our game and that’s all you can do.”

Freshman Caroline Gianeselli scored the final goal with 18:16 left on an assist from junior Caroline Lutz.

Bearden goalkeeper Sarah Canter made the most of the poor weather and came away with a solid performance in the shutout.

“Our goalie played outstanding today in these conditions,” coach Turner said. “For a goalie to get a shutout and a defense to get a shutout today, I can’t say enough about Sarah. She didn’t bobble any, she caught everything clean and their goalie struggled today and that showed a little bit.”
