CAK performs ‘Tom Sawyer,’ displays artwork

Christian Academy of Knoxville’s 3rd annual Evening of Elegance For the Arts, which raises funds for the school’s arts programs, featured performances by the CAK Warrior Band, the Junior Praise Choir, the CAK Honor Choir and the Spirit of Praise Ensemble.

Artwork from various CAK art students also was on display in the lobby. Anderson Farms catered the dinner and Mr. Samuel L. Clemens, played by Ray Elder, served as the event’s Master of Ceremonies.

The evening’s main event, however, was the opening night production of the award-winning CAK Middle School Musical Theatre’s performance of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” While many may be familiar with the books and some of the movies about this beloved character, the fact that young Tom has his own musical is not that well known.

The musical centers around all the well-known characters in Tom’s world: Huckleberry Finn, Becky Thatcher, Aunt Polly, Sidney Sawyer, Injun Joe and Judge Josiah Thatcher. Many of Tom’s most famous escapades are retold and come to life with vivid humor.

Peggy Filyaw, CAK music teacher and musical theater director, selected the material. Kyle O’Connor and Micah Robinette played Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, respectively. Stephanie Lee played Aunt Polly.

Other cast members include Aaron Waldrupe as Sydney Sawyer, Travis Blackwell as Judge Josiah Thatcher, Cassidy Belk as Becky Thatcher and Denali Weichbrodt as Injun Joe.
