Farinella tops at Bradley

A pair of performances stood out for Farragut High School wrestling among a 24-team field from three states in the Bradley Central Invitational.

Senior A.J. Farinella, ranked fourth statewide (Division I) in the 145-pound class, finished second at the annual Bradley Central High School tourney in Cleveland, held this season Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14-15.

Losing to the state’s top-ranked 145 Division I wrestler, Dean Pavlou of Bradley in the finals, Farinella drops his first match of the season (17-1 entering the week).

The FHS senior went 3-1 at Bradley among a field that included teams from Georgia and Alabama.

Tim Brunson, FHS head coach, said Farinella likely will drop to the 140-pound class later this season.

FHS sophomore Greg Grieco (171) impressed Brunson despite winning just one match.

“But the two that he lost, gosh, were in the last few seconds,” Brunson said, as Grieco’s record stood at 9-5 entering the week. “Grieco wrestled pretty dad-gum well.”

As for the tough field at BCHS, Brunson said, “Three of our kids drew one- or two-seeds in the first round. Didn’t catch a break in that first-round, lost a few heartbreakers.”
