Winless hockey week for FHS, Bearden teams

Neither Farragut nor Bearden/Karns found the win column during week six of the Knoxville Amateur Hockey Association high school season last Thursday, Dec. 13, in the Icearium.

But the Bearden/Karns team made everyone pay attention when they tied the Metro Pirates 3-3 in a well-played first game. B/K out-shot the Pirates 30-25 in a sea-saw battle with B/K leading at the end of both the first and second periods (2-1, then 3-2).

With 2:25 left in the second, the Pirates made it 2-2, but B/K co-captain David Rousseau buried one in the back of the net at 1:52 just 33 seconds later on a feed from freshman Alex Nickels.

After killing off the penalty early in the third period, Pirates’ Mike Meredith used his body, his skates and his stick to push the puck through two different B/K defenders and score the game tying goal at 4:56 left in the third period. Bearden/Karns point leaders: Cox one goal/one assist, Rousseau one goal/one assist.

The Warriors, who out-shot Farragut 40-9, whipped the Admirals 8-3 in game two.

The big story here is the play by Warrior Evan Cherry — with three points on a goal and two assists he continues to be the engine behind this team. Spencer Mackle had a hat trick including an unassisted game-winning fourth goal.

Point leaders for Warriors: Mackle three goals; Cherry and Howanitz, one goal, two assists each; Huckabee, two assists.

Farragut individual top stats: Sanseverino one goal, one assist. Goalkeeper Nathan Rathgeb, 80 percent save percentage.
