• Farragut High School Parent Teacher Student Organization’s mid-year newsletter is now available at Some important dates and times to remember from the newsletter are: first day back to school for students is Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, and Open House will begin at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, in the main auditorium.

• Hardin Valley Academy has added two more people to its staff. Rachel Bruun is currently a guidance counselor at Karns High School and will take on that same position with HVA in January. Carloyn Carter is currently a teaching assistant at Hardin Valley Elementary School and will be joining HVA in January as a secretary to the guidance office. 

• Teachers can register their middle school teams in grades six through eight to compete in the 2008 Energy Bowl at the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge. Registration deadline for middle school teams is Friday, Feb. 8, 2008. The 2008 Energy Bowl is a single-elimination, grade level competition for all public, private and home-school teams of four members plus alternates. Tournament, similar to the College Bowl concept, is slated for sixth-grade Tuesday, March 4, seventh-grade Wednesday, March 5 and eighth-grade Thursday, March 6. Registration fee for each team is $20, payable to AMSE. • Young cancer survivors preparing for higher education may be eligible for scholarships from the Mid-South Division of the American Cancer Society. The Society’s Mid-South Division will award $1,000 scholarships to eligible individuals who have fought cancer and are attending an accredited university, college or vocational/technical school. Awards for the 2008-2009 academic year will be announced in March 2008. To be eligible, applicants must be under 25 years old, have had a cancer diagnosis before age 21 and be a resident of Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, or Floyd or Clark counties in Indiana and a United States citizen. Candidates also must have a GPA of at least 2.5 and been accepted into an accredited school. Applications are due by Friday, Feb. 1. Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need, leadership, academic achievement and community service. • Students in good financial standing at Roane State may defer payment of up to 50 percent of their fees for spring semester. After the 50 percent minimum down payment, students may pay the balance in two monthly installments – due Saturday, March 1, 2008, and Tuesday, April 1. Students have the option of making the deferred payments with a Visa or MasterCard credit card via Roane State’s Web site.
