Dodgen clarifies position on future

Quoted by a Knoxville media source as saying “this will be my last time coming” to the annual Super 16 high school basketball tournament at Bearden High School, Farragut boys basketball head coach Donald Dodgen clarified his point by tourney’s end.

“We’re looking at other options,” Dodgen said Saturday, Dec. 29, after his Admirals thrashed Jefferson County 68-40 to finish fifth at the tourney (see story beginning on page 8).

Dodgen’s “last time” comment came after the Admirals’ 85-71 loss to perennial power Fulton Thursday, Dec. 27, in the Super 16 opening round.

The FHS skipper added it’s possible his boys may join coach Mike Driver’s Farragut Lady Admirals on its annual late December trip to the Sunshine Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla. (see story, page 8).

“I wouldn’t mind trying to do that. ... You’re guaranteed four games, and you get to go to Disney World,” Dodgen said.

Any change would end several consecutive years of Farragut boys’ involvement in the Super 16, having won it in 2001 and 2003.

“Mike and I have talked about it,” Dodgen said. “I’m not going to close any options out.

About Florida, Dodgen added, “I’ve got to talk to parents. We’ve got to raise money.”
