• YWCA Knoxville’s Annual Race Against Racism 5K Run / 1 Mile Walk begins at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan.19, at the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center in East Knoxville. Sign-in and registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. Route has been designed to run along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and other historical markers. The day includes exhibitors, entertainment, speakers, food and most importantly the inspirational message to do everything in your power to eliminate racism. YWCA Knoxville challenges businesses, organization, churches, families and individuals to take part in this race to show dedication to the cause. Registration costs are $15 per person on a team of five or more, $12 per child under 15 years of age, $20 per individual before Jan. 9 and $25 thereafter. • East Tennessee Chapter of Tennessee Trails Association will host a hike Jan. 6 on House Mountain. This is a difficult 4 1/2 mile climb and descent on Knox County's only mountain park. Call A. Hubbs at 865-494-9522 to pre-register. Participants will carpool from downtown due to limited parking at the trailhead. Rain the day before cancels event due to muddy trails.

• Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon is set for Sunday, March 30, Participants may run or walk in a 5K, relay, half marathon or full marathon. More team information team will be available at For more info:

• Cariten Kids' Run Kick-off is at Knoxville Zoo beginning at noon, Saturday, Jan. 19. Children can be registered and complete their first mile inside the zoo. Registration is from 10 to 11:45 a.m. Zoo remains open until 4:30 p.m. Registrants and one adult receive free admission, all other friends and family get half-price admission. Registration is $15, $5 for Cariten members. There are no time constraints; registrants can enjoy the zoo after the Kick-off run.

 • Knoxville Lacrosse Spring 2008 Registration for boys fourth- through eighth-grade runs from 5 to 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 10, in Farragut Middle School theatre. Coaches will be available to answer questions from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $175 for A/B players (includes team jersey and shorts — cost lower if uniform not needed); $85 for recreation players (includes a reversible penny). • Town of Farragut Leisure Services Department announces application packets for clubs requesting field use at any Farragut park for Spring 2008 (March 8 to June 1) are available at Town Hall or on the Town’s Web site at Absolute deadline for completed application packets to be returned to Town Hall is 5 p.m., Friday, Jan. 4, (not postmarked). • Harvey Broome Group of Tennessee Chapter of the Sierra Club announces upcoming outings, which include: Jan. 19-20, Backpack, Frozen Head State Park; Jan. 19-20, Winter Backpack, Frozen Head State Park. There are several approaches to the backcountry site at Tubb Springs. A longer approach would be chosen if weather is fair, a shorter one if it is foul. Most of hiking and camp will take place at about 3,000 foot elevation, high enough to give us a good chance for camping in snow. Trip requires good cold-weather gear -— check with leader if you are unsure about your equipment. Distance 3 to 6 miles each way, depending on route chosen. Rated moderate in mild weather, difficult in bad weather. Driving distance/time about 45 miles/1 hour, 15 minutes each way.
